In his typical pithy fashion, R.S. Gilbert of Braddon this week announced his retirement from writing letters to the editor of The Canberra Times in just a single sentence.

Twenty-one years of writing letters. More than 1000 letters published. It was time to hang up the pen.
Why?
"I'm 91 now and getting on a bit and I think after 21 years, I've said all I want to say," he said.
But he has had to resist the urge to fire off another missive or two.
"Even this week, I've read things and thought, 'Well, that's nonsense'," he said.
R.S. Gilbert – Ron Solley Gilbert – is a former deputy chairman of the Trade Practices Commission.
His first letter to the Times was published in 1995 lamenting the territory's betterment charge.
He now has 12 folders containing each of the letters he's since had published over the last two decades.
