WHEN Corporal Daniel Keighran visited the War Memorial two years ago, he thought how proud he would be if his name was ever among the winners of the Victoria Cross.

On Saturday he returned with his own VC to present to the Hall of Valour, where it will go on display.

Corporal Keighran was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia for his heroic actions at Derapet, Uruzgan province, Afghanistan, on August 24, 2010. He was instrumental in the withdrawal of a combined Australian and Afghan patrol with no further casualties.

''It will certainly be in good company, especially when the actions of so many recipients cost them their lives,'' Corporal Keighran said. ''I hope my VC inspires people to visit the memorial, to learn more about our military history and the sacrifices of all those who have served.''

The medal, now loaned to the memorial, will go on display next year.
