Pursuit ends with punch to face

February 12, 2012

A man allegedly punched an officer in the face after he led police on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen car this morning.

Police saw a man run a red light at the Nyrang Street and Canberra Avenue intersection in Fyshwick about 3.30am. Police believe the grey Mazda 3 he was in was stolen during a burglary in Bruce last week.

The patrol car followed it into the Fyshwick KFC car park, and turned on its sirens.

But the driver allegedly sped away through the adjacent petrol station.

Police were then led on a pursuit through Fyshwick, Narrabundah and Red Hill, before the fleeing vehicle hit a gutter on La Perouse Street.

The impact caused a tyre to deflate, and the driver and a passenger got out and fled on foot.

Police said they ran after the driver, and as they were attempting to arrest, he allegedly punched one of the officers in the face.

The male passenger managed to evade police, and authorities are still hunting the man today.

A 23-year-old man was taken to the ACT Watch House, and will appear in court today, charged with common assault, driving a motor vehicle without consent and furious driving.
