Queen may return in 2013

Queen may return in 2013

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says she can see no reason why the Queen may not return to Canberra for the national capital's centenary in 2013.

Speculation has been rife that the 85-year-old monarch is making her final visit to Australia.

However, Ms Gallagher said having seen the Queen up close over the past two days, there was nothing to indicate she was drawing away from public duties or saying her final goodbyes to the nation.

The Queen visited Canberra for the city's 50th birthday in 1963 and whether she returned in 2013 remained to be seen.

''That would be fantastic if she did,'' Ms Gallagher said.

''In terms of her energy I've seen since she hopped off that plane and this morning, she's sharp and not showing any signs of slowing down.''

Canberra was shown in all its glory yesterday as the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were transported across Lake Burley Griffin by an Admiral's Barge and then walked among the blooms of Floriade under sunny skies in unseasonably warm weather.

As the Queen toured Floriade, the temperature was about 24 degrees, three degrees above average for October, while the mercury eventually soared later in the day to 27 degrees.

Ms Gallagher said it was wonderful the Queen was spending six days in Canberra during her 11-day visit to Australia.

''It's just lovely for us that she's prioritised Canberra, she's spending more than half her visit here, and that she's taken time out to do a visit just for the ACT community, which is what [the Floriade visit] was all about, instead of the national focus.''

Ms Gallagher said the visit to Floriade was a great thank you to the staff and volunteers who worked on the event.

''To have Her Majesty come and visit their work is just amazing, but again the profile of beaming photos of Canberra right around the world is really a fantastic opportunity for us,'' she said.

The Queen's visit will have a political focus today when she receives Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott at Government House this morning.

Parliament House will close to the public at 4pm - an hour earlier than usual - to accommodate a reception in the Great Hall tonight for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Ms Gillard and the Queen are both expected to give speeches tonight, with the monarch effectively speaking to the Australian public for the first time this visit.

The royal couple is due to arrive at Parliament House shortly after 6pm.

The Sydney chapter of the Australian Girls Choir is set to sing God Save the Queen and Advance Australia Fair at the reception.

The Duke of Edinburgh in the afternoon will also host a reception at Government House for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme.
