But it isn't all bad news, according to one entrant in The Canberra Times Winter Photo Competition, who says the cold weather keeps the Canberra haters out of the city.

Canberra has enjoyed an unusually warm and dry June so far this year, with 11 days in a row above the monthly average maximum temperature of 12 degrees and just 13 millimetres of rainfall.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the strange weather was due to a lack of strong fronts moving through the region, continuing a trend of calm weather from last month when temperatures were warm and the ACT had only 14 millimetres of rain.

But Mr Domensino said a cold front moving through the region on Friday afternoon would end that, bringing rain and below-average temperatures, followed by sub-zero mornings early next week and frost.

"We'll see some showers reaching the ACT on Friday afternoon and evening, and then behind the system we've got some cold air moving in," he said.

"The overnight temperatures will drop – they're only looking at getting down to about 4 or 5 degrees. On Monday we could see [morning] temperatures dropping below freezing.

"So, rain to start and then colder temperatures and then frost to end it all. This system's got a bit of everything in it."

Reid resident Andrew Davis was one of a number of local photographers to enter the Winter Photo Competition this month, with a stunning picture of the sun shining through fog at Gungoandra Creek, south of the ACT.

He said the winter weather in Canberra was beautiful, describing it as the best time of the year.

"It's generally still, it's cold, there's no flies, snakes or spiders. And just generally the light's better because it's clearer," he said.

"Everyone knows Canberra's got four distinct seasons and all the Canberra-bashers hate winter, but for the people that love the ACT it's a good thing. Because it keeps those people away!"
