The sole surviving ACT Green representative after the party's electoral rout says he will not be offering a ''running commentary'' of his talks with the Canberra Liberals and ACT Labor in the coming days. With the Assembly in an eight-eight-one deadlock, both major parties are courting Mr Rattenbury's vote in order to form government.

The Greens MLA received the backing on Sunday of more than 70 party members who packed a meeting at Havelock House in Civic, with many expressing the view that Mr Rattenbury should back Labor leader Katy Gallagher as Chief Minister.

But The Canberra Times understands that a number of speakers at Sunday's meeting advocated a deal with the Liberals, with some arguing the Greens must publicly distance themselves from the ALP to win back their party's identity. Mr Rattenbury is also seeking the counsel of his federal leader Christine Milne and was seen at Parliament House at the weekend conferring with a senior member of Senator Milne's staff.

The ACT Greens will now embark on at least two internal reviews of their election campaign in an attempt to establish what led to the near wipe-out that saw leader Meredith Hunter, Brindabella MLA Amanda Bresnan and Molonglo member Caroline Le Couteur all lose their seats.

Mr Rattenbury said yesterday that he had won the backing of his membership at Sunday's meeting and that it may be up to a week before the big decision was made. ''The Assembly will meet next Tuesday for that first sitting where the Chief Minister will be voted on,'' he said.

''As Speaker I actually have responsibility to convene that first sitting next Tuesday.

''Both the leaders are comfortable with that, so that becomes the formal deadline.

''The negotiations will be quicker than that.''

Ms Gallagher agreed that it would be several days before a decision was made.

''I think it's going to be a long week and really now the ball's in Mr Rattenbury's court to come back and say exactly what the Greens are seeking,'' the Labor leader said.

Ms Gallagher would not rule out granting extra resources to Mr Rattenbury's office.

''There would be extra resources that are raised just from not having his colleagues around and they did get extra supplementation in 2008 to deal with the workload that they would have as a party in the assembly, which hadn't been previously recognised,'' she said.

Canberra Liberals leader Zed Seselja said yesterday that he thought there were areas of policy similarity between his party and the Greens.

''A lot of the ones that focus on better local services, I think there's a lot of similarities there and obviously there's a lot of differences as well because we're different parties,'' he said.

''When this decision is taken, the Greens will need to be confident that they will actually get the outcomes they're seeking. It's not about good intentions. The Labor Party has said all sorts of things in the last term that it didn't deliver on.''
