Recruitment has begun for drivers for Canberra's light rail network.
Stage one of the project is due to be finished by the end of the year, and Canberra Metro has called for expressions of interest from people keen to take a light rail vehicle for a spin.
About 30 drivers will be needed to run the service on the 12-kilometre stretch between Civic and Gungahlin.
Thankfully for Canberra locals, previous experience driving a light rail vehicle is not a requirement.
Drivers will need a current driver's licence, a minimum of five years driving experience on a full licence and a Working With Vulnerable People card.
They will also need customer service and conflict resolution experience, Transport Minister Meegan Fitzharris said.
"The key attributes that Canberra Metro is seeking in drivers is an attitude of delivering excellent customer service and placing a priority on safety," she said.
Training will kick off in the first quarter of 2018.
Drivers will spent four weeks learning in the classroom and undertaking on-track training, before spending two weeks in the cab with a mentor driver.
Some of the first recruits will get to undertake practical driver training on the light rail systems in Edinburgh and Karlsruhe in Germany.
Selected recruits will be trained in both driving and customer service roles, so they can work in both areas.
Changes to the ACT's road rules last year made it mandatory for tram drivers to hold a full Australian car licence.
It also gave the police the power to breath-test them (like other passenger-vehicle drivers, tram drivers have to blow a zero blood alcohol level) or fine them for speeding while operating the light rail vehicle.
The changes also meant the only way you'll get to drive a tram in Canberra is if you get one of these jobs - the bill made it a crime to take a light rail vehicle for a joy-ride.
