Police will allege the 38-year-old Belconnen man recorded a blood alcohol concentration more than three times the legal limit, at 0.169.

The man had been disqualified from driving for a previous drink-driving offence and he will now face the ACT Magistrate's court charged with driving while disqualified and driving over the prescribed concentration of alcohol.

The man allegedly lost control of the black Nissan Z51 Murano four wheel drive while entering the Belconnen Shell Service station, and struck a petrol bowser before smashing through the Coles Express shop front.

The car came to a stop inside the store, causing significant damage to the building.

A spokeswoman for Coles said the incident had caused extensive damage to the store and to stock, but by Thursday it had been cleaned up and was trading as normal.

The spokeswoman said the employee who was in the store at the time of the incident had been offered counselling.

Acting Superintendent Rod Anderson said it was extremely fortunate no one was hurt in the incident.

"Driving intoxicated into an area full of combustible liquids has the potential to create a real disaster, particularly in one of our more populated areas," he said.
