Canberra's helicopter rescue service has secured funding for a new $1 million facility to be built at its base in Hume, after a federal government funding announcement on Tuesday morning.

Regional Affairs Minister Catherine King visited the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter base to confirm the government would kick in $500,000 through the regional development funding program.

"One of the really great things about your application in particular was the amount of support you've got from the communities in these areas," she said.

The money will help fund a new staff and training facility to be built adjacent to the helicopter base in Hume.

In its application, the chopper service had to find matching funds, which boss Owen Finegan said would be made up in part by builders and architects working at cost to build the new facility.

"It's been a real community consultation method to get the funding and get it matched," Mr Finegan said.

"For the first time since we started, ask our staff will be co-located."

He said the facility would allow more collaboration between operators and support staff, and would also be used by visitors and community groups.

It is hoped building will begin early next year, be finished by mid next year.
