Residents yet to step into the new space will have the opportunity to explore the $2 million internal redesign including a new gallery, new multi-purpose space and new dance studio, and improvements to the existing dance studio.
But the displays, performances and workshops scheduled for Saturday will not be confined within the centre's walls.
Lakeside, an outdoor installation of sculptures made from recycled materials, will frame Lake Tuggeranong between the arts centre and Lake Tuggeranong College and includes an eclectic collection of work from emerging and established artists.
Revellers can enjoy performances, workshops and food inside and outside the centre, including a range of special art activities for children that will take over the upstairs cafe.
Centre CEO Rauny Worm said the progressive opening was not only a chance to showcase the new centre but engage people with the local art scene.
“Although we are overjoyed to be back in this beautiful, refurbished and extended building, we know that great art can happen anywhere – never tied to a time or a building,” she said.
“The plan is to show the space but also say to people, 'we really want you to come and tell us what you want to do at this building'.
“Our opening is about introducing a building that is open for business, open for creating, enjoying and dissecting society and life through art; a building that has a strong focus on including everyone in the community.
"It's a place where the community can sing, dance, laugh, and make art installations out of recycled barbecues, if they want.”
More than 300 Fresh Funk dancers are among local programs and community groups already making the most of the revamped space.
Currently preparing for Saturday's opening bonanza, students are excited to be back in their old but improved home.
Fresh Funk manager Caroline Wall said the students had enjoyed about five weeks worth of lessons in the new centre.
“They could barely recognise the place when they first came back in, they were so impressed and happy. We now have a second studio as well as their own chill-out space, a place they can get changed and leave their bags. They're just over the moon."
Mrs Wall said the revamped space boosted morale and anticipation for the urban contemporary dance program's future.
“We'd about reached maximum capacity in terms of building space. It means there's potential for more stuff in the future,” she said.
Besides performing, Fresh Funk will be also hosting a free open dance class Saturday afternoon.
“I think it will be a really good day. People will realise just how much is happening down here. On top of Fresh Funk we have kids' drama classes, a choir, different art classes, space for hire, two galleries full of artwork – there's so much going on here,” Mrs Wall said.
Tuggeranong Arts Centre's official opening will run on Saturday, November 30 from 11am to 4pm.
