One thread on the easily found but illegal page promises more than 250 photos of women from north Canberra and a "bunch of southside girls", and includes requests for photos of girls from Dickson College and women enrolled at the University of Canberra.

People using the website trade photos of women and teenagers without their knowledge or consent and tally "wins".

The Education Directorate has contacted schools where it believes students may be affected. It has also been working with police.

An ACT Policing spokeswoman said police were assessing the website, though no complaints about intimate image abuse had yet been made.

"We take any reports of image-based abuse seriously," she said.

Other threads on the website promise images of women from other states, regions and schools, Snapchat screenshots and individual people. Photos of girls in school uniform are widespread.

The Australian Federal Police has previously investigated a similar page and this week acknowledged its reappearance. The 2016 investigation saw the agency partner with other police forces and the eSafety Commissioner successfully remove the page.

An AFP spokesman would not say whether the agency was investigating now.

"It should be noted that the internet can create jurisdictional difficulties, particularly if internet sites are hosted outside Australia," he said.

"We encourage people affected by this issue to seek support from friends, family and wellbeing services such as Kids Helpline, who offer free and confidential phone and messaging counselling."

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner, which is responsible for the removal of illegal online material in Australia, has received "a number of recent reports" about the website, a spokeswoman confirmed.

"Our image-based abuse team is taking action on these reports, while ensuring that the victims in question are receiving the help and support they need during such a distressing time," she said.

"Where images are reported to us, we contact the site and seek rapid removal of the material. We have used this approach in the past, with considerable success - resolving over 150 cases this way to date.

"If intimate images of Australians are shared online without consent, we encourage them to report to us, identifying the images, so that we can take removal action."

The ACT Legislative Assembly passed last year a bill that means people who publish, or threaten to publish, revenge porn face up to three years in jail or a $45,000 fine.

The penalties are bumped up to five years in jail or a fine of up to $75,000 if the victim is aged under 16. Canberra courts can order people to take down or delete the intimate image, and those who fail to comply can face up to two years' jail or a $30,000 fine.

No charges have been laid under the new legislation, though the ACT Policing spokeswoman noted there had been "numerous" successful prosecutions under previous laws.

"This is a reminder that online offending does not provide anonymity for offenders," she said.

"We work closely domestically and internationally with numerous agencies in an effort to protect the community, especially young people from intimate image based abuse."
