Mr Muldoon, who now lives in Melbourne and is well known as a long-time Playschool host and television personality, discovered his childhood home in Ulm Street, Scullin, is in the Fluffy cohort, its ceiling full of the pure asbestos insulation.

"I'm not sure how you're supposed to react to it," he said. "It's just something that you find out 30 years after the event. It's just sort of strange really ... I've already played in the stuff. What do I do now?"

Mr Muldoon is one of potentially thousands of people to discover this week that they have owned or tenanted a Fluffy house, with the Asbestos Taskforce estimating as many as 30,000 people have lived in the homes over the past 50 years.

But he is one who lived with the asbestos insulation while it was still in place, before the clean up of 1989-1992.

The young Rhys Muldoon moved into the Ulm Street home with his air force family, including a younger sister, about 1970 when he was five, and he recalls playing regularly in the ceiling with his younger sister among the blue-grey fluff, even making a cubby house there. He lived in the house till he was about 17, when he left home.

He had no idea then it was dangerous and no hint he had been in an asbestos-contaminated house until this week. The news left him surprised and unsure what to do next, although Mr Muldoon said he would register with the Australian National University-led health study.

"I've only just heard about it, I don't know what to think about it," he said.

He had more to think about when he discovered another Fluffy link on Wednesday. His mother left Canberra about 1986 but returned some years later and she bought a house in Levien Street, Scullin. That house, too, is on the Fluffy list and now set for buyback and demolition.

Mr Muldoon's parents and sister no longer live in Canberra and he believes they are as ignorant of the Fluffy issue as he was until this week. He now intends to talk to them about it.

Nor had Mr Muldoon heard of the mass demolition plan until he spoke on Wednesday with the Canberra Times and he described the news as incredible.

He does recall his best friend's house in Jindivik Place around the corner from Ulm Street being cleaned of asbestos some years after he had left home but said he never saw or heard of his childhood home being cleaned.

Asbestos taskforce head Andrew Kefford confirmed this week that every house on the Fluffy buyback and demolition list of addresses released this week has been cleaned, almost all of them in the Commonwealth remediation of 1989-1992, with six discovered and cleaned in the years since.

He assured people discovering they had lived in a Fluffy home that health risks were low, even in circumstances like those of Mr Muldoon. But he acknowledged the range of emotions expressed on Wednesday.

"The personal, emotional element of where we've been for the last 12 months is absolutely a defining feature of this process," he said. "What we're trying to do is recognise the range of emotions are going to come, whether that be distress or worry or anger or surprise, or whatever it might be, But there isn't one story about this. As we broaden it now, it's potentially 30,000 that we're talking about. That's a lot of different stories."
