The popularity of social cycling with Canberra's female population has been steadily increasing over the past few years, with mothers in particular taking up the sport.

Mum Leonie Collis plans to take part in a women's-only ride from Canberra to the coast in October, one of a number of female biking events that have popped up across the capital.
Ms Collis said she was aware more women were taking up the sport as it became accessible in terms of cost.
"It's less of everyone has to wear the right thing and look the right part and have a $1000 bike, and more of well it's just fun, let's all get amongst it," she said.
"It has become more accessible, and you don't have to be an elite athlete to get into it."
Although Ms Collis began cycling more than 20 years ago, she said she wouldn't call herself a cyclist.
"I'm a commuter. I do enjoy cycling, and I've always enjoyed it but I wouldn't call myself a cyclist.
"I drop off the kids here [at North Ainslie Primary School] and this one goes to preschool in Watson, then I ride to work and pick everyone up again on the way home. That is the extent of my riding really."
Despite her modesty, the round trip can be up to 24 kilometres each day.
For Cait Rawson, the girl's-only bike trip would provide the chance to tick the challenge off her bucket list. It was just a few short years ago that Ms Rawson tried her first ride.
"It was on the Centenary Trail, I did really badly but I did it," she said.
"My husband has been a keen rider for many years and he's been trying desperately to get me into it."
The pull of cycling came from watching her husband and children enjoying themselves on bikes.
"I didn't want to be left behind. I figured if they could do it, so could I, and I wanted to be more active with them anyway."
The 150-kilometre Ride the Divide girl's-only trip was a personal challenge Ms Rawson said she wouldn't have undertaken without the help of tour guide and Paralympic cyclist Michael Milton.
"It's fun fitness, and it's a personal challenge. I'm a bit nervous, you always take on these things with a bit of trepidation," she said.
Milton's tour company runs the event, and is hoping to attract more women to take part. He said after many years in the sport, he was happy to see the increase in females taking part in cycling.
"I do see a real focus in the cycling world on girls, and that is at all levels of the sport," he said.
"We want to support girls to get out there and do something that is adventurous but still realistic."
