Dressed in jeans, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted walking hand-in-hand through the well manicured Yarralumla lawns on Monday morning, and snapped by the ABC.

There is no word on whether they ran into some of the native wildlife at the Governor-General's residence, although an encounter with the kangaroos on the lawns of Government House in Canberra seems par for the course for any visiting royal.

Earlier, there was speculation the British royals had something else up their sleeve for their rest day in Canberra on Monday - heading out of the manicured grounds at Yarralumla to visit an Aussie homestead.

The suggestion was that Prince William might make a flying visit to Woomargama, the property near Albury, in southern NSW, where he spent much of his debut tour to Australia in 1983, as a nine-month-old, while his parents' engagements took them around the country.

The property, owned by businessman and National Portrait Gallery founding patron Gordon Darling, was where William stayed during his first visit to Australia.

However, Mr Darling's daughter Clare Cannon, who now runs the property, was emphatic that another royal visit was not on the cards. ''No, that's not true,'' Mrs Cannon said.

Kensington Palace also seemed to think a trip there - exhausting in one day even by plane - was unlikely. Even if it would make a nice bookend to the history of royal tours to have Prince George visit the property as well.

Instead, they seem likely to just stick to seeing the kangaroos as have other visiting royals. Tasmanian-born Danish Crown Princess Mary, introduced Prince Frederik to some inhabitants of her home country there in the grounds in 2005.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip saw the lounging kangaroos as they toured the grounds of Government House on a solar-powered golf buggy in 2011.

Both occasions were official media events but on Monday the duke and duchess and Prince George will be enjoying a no-media, engagement-free rest day.

And they might take the opportunity later in the day to introduce Prince George to the some more Australian wildlife.

Perhaps they will use their time on the 54-hectare property to simply chill out away from the public eye, to prepare for their next round of engagements - a flight to Uluru in the Northern Territory on Tuesday morning.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been a keen dragon boater so perhaps she will glance across Lake Burley Griffin on Monday to see some local boating action.

One former insider said the British royals regarded Government House as a refuge from their whirlwind of public engagements.

The Queen was especially appreciative of it.

''She loved the grounds. She's definitely very fond of it, she's found it very restful,'' he said.

Prince Charles has said it felt like a home away from home.

''I think Government House has always made people feel very much at home,'' the former insider said.

The royals retire to a private wing of the homestead where ''they can interact as much as they choose to,'' he said.

Or ''if they don't, they can just use it as a time to rest'', he said.
