The August 23 snap strike by as many as 40 workers with contractor Cleanaway meant homes in more than 30 suburbs were left without a kerbside garbage and recycling collection. Cleanaway continued extra shifts on Friday afternoon to clear the remaining backlog of rubbish bin collections. Further catch-up rubbish and recycling collections were expected to take place in parts of the city's south on Saturday.
Last week, the Fair Work Commission ruled the industrial action was illegal and ordered that no further strike action be taken.
A new contract for Canberra's household garbage and recycling collection services has been awarded to SITA Australia and will begin in October.
