The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe storm warning for the ACT and surrounding regions just before 3pm.
The storm is expected to generate hail and strong winds for several hours.
The State Emergency Service is on standby, and is urging Canberrans to reconsider their Australia Day plans to take account of the poor weather.
They are advising residents to shelter pets and vehicles, and disconnect electrical appliances.
The bureau’s severe thunderstorm warning will be reassessed at 6pm.
