Severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra: Damaging winds and large hail hit ACT

Damaging winds and hailstones hit Canberra on Thursday afternoon as severe thunderstorms moved east from Burrinjuck Dam and Wee Jasper.

The ACT State Emergency Service received 59 calls for help as of 6pm. None have involved major injuries or damage.

The storm reached Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport and South Canberra shortly before 4pm.

Gusts of 104km/hr were recorded at Canberra Airport and within ten minutes, 17.4mm of rain fell and temperatures dropped 8 degrees.

The BOM cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning at 4.55pm, but continue to monitor the situation.
