Shaw Vineyard Estate hopes to sell millions of dollars worth of its premium cold climate wines a year direct to the South Korean public through Marley Coffee's 30 strong network of coffee shops.

More than half of South Korea's 51 million people live in the area around Seoul where most of the coffee shops are to be found.

Based in Jamaica and operated by Rohan Marley, the coffee-growing son of Reggae cultural icon, Bob Marley, the venues offer a "casual and classy" experience based on quality coffee, good food and fine wines. Customers can buy wine by the glass and then, if they like it, pick up a bottle or a case to take home.

The export breakthrough, which Mr Shaw hopes will more than double the winery's exports from 30 to 70 per cent of its total production of about 25,000 cases a year, was made possible by a South Korea Trade Mission put together by the Canberra Business Chamber in May.

CBC program director Dean Seeley said three local companies, Bottles of Australia, Tanlay Food Group and Shaw Vineyard Estate had all taken part. Other deals brokered as a part of the mission are expected to be made public soon.

Brett Cooper, Australia's senior trade commissioner in South Korea, worked closely with the mission. He said he was pleased significant deals were being struck with Canberra businesses so soon after the FTA had been signed.

"I am a Canberran myself and I am delighted with the success of Graeme's wines [in the South Korean market]."

Mr Cooper said other wine exporting countries, including America, France, Italy, Chile, Spain and Germany were also vying for a share of the South Korean wine market.

"A number of these countries already had free trade agreements with South Korea and this gave them an edge [over Australia]," he said. "The Australian South Korean FTA has put us back in the game."

Australian [wine] imports are already up by both volume and value since the start of 2015, admittedly off a low base.

Mr Shaw said the vineyard's cabernet sauvignon had been particularly well received at tastings in Seoul.

"While the area is not that well known for its cabernets because there have not been extensive plantings, our cabernet is quite well known," he said.

"People will say this is a boost for the Canberra region's `emerging' wine industry. My question is `just how much longer do we have to emerge?' This area has an international reputation as a producer of high quality, cool climate wines."

Strong evidence of this has emerged in recent weeks with news Shaw's Merriman Merlot had been named as one of the top three in the world with a gold medal at the AWC Vienna wine show.

"We are waiting on the final results to learn if we have been ranked one, two or three," Mr Shaw said.

Shaw sent six wines to Vienna and scored three gold and three silver medals.

The Murrumbateman and Canberra wine shows are being judged this weekend.
