Louise Bai, 56, is accused of taking a friend's bolt action .22 rifle and shooting her former partner in the shoulder as he came out of the toilet of a granny flat at her McKellar property last month.
She is now facing a charge of attempted murder and two weapons charges, but was released on bail on a $50,000 surety last week.
Bai faced the ACT Magistrates Court again on Wednesday, with the prosecution saying it needed another four to six weeks to bring together all of its evidence.
But Bai's lawyer told the court the complainant had now changed his story on the alleged shooting.
The lawyer said the latest version of events would give no possibility of convicting Bai.
Bai's lawyers sought a one-week adjournment for the prosecution to sort out the conflicting statements, saying she needed to get back to the United States, where her husband lived.
But the prosecution said it was committed to "vigorously pursuing" Bai over the charges.
The alleged victim has returned to China, the court heard, making communication difficult.
Magistrate Beth Campbell said prosecutors should be given enough time to build their case.
"It seems to me it is not unreasonable to give the prosecution the six weeks they seek," Ms Campbell said.
The court heard that ballistics evidence, suggesting the range and angles involved in the shooting, was likely to be included in the case.
Bai's lawyer signalled he would apply to cross-examine the alleged victim of the shooting, which would require him to be brought back from China.
Bai will return to court in May.
