The fireworks spectacular entered its fourth decade in style, culminating a big two weeks for Canberra with Enlighten and the Balloon Spectacular also wrapped up for the year.

Thousands packed the banks of Lake Burley Griffin to watch the RAAF Roulettes perform acrobatic stunts followed by an FA-18 flyover. The Potbelleez then got the crowd dancing as they waited for the main event.

The fireworks display was 18 minutes of extravagant lights and explosions timed to hits provided by 104.7 including some classics from across the 30 years of Skyfire events.

Amanda Smith, who has grown up attending the fireworks, was excited to take her young cousins this year as the next generation of Skyfire fans.

"As kids we'd go with mum and huddle on Regatta Point as the wind came off the lake but we loved it," Ms Smith said.

"There will always be people saying 'how much can you really do with fireworks', but it's a free event while the weather is still relatively warm that attracts thousands of people."

She said true Canberrans knew to bring a "just-in-case jumper" as you can never quite predict an autumn night in the capital.

With up to a quarter of Canberra turning out for the event there is always pandemonium with road closures and hard to find parking but Skyfire once again drew huge crowds in 2018.
