Smoke from controlled burn spreads

February 7, 2012

A hazard reduction burn covering about three hectares is producing a large amount of smoke over Fyshwick and adjoining suburbs.

The ACT Rural Fire Service started the burn at the AcrewAGL Fyshwick Sewage Treatment Plant on Dairy Road, near the Monaro Highway, at 6pm. It is expected to finish at about 10pm.

An ESA spokesman said the burn "would allow ActewAGL to assess the condition of the lagoon embankments at the Plant to accurately scope any required maintenance".

The ACT Emergency Services Agency is warning people with breathing difficulties to remain indoors until the smoke clears.
