The Emergency Services Agency and ACT Policing have asked smokers not to throw butts from vehicles, or anywhere which could spark a fire. This includes footpaths, median strips, sporting fields, grassed areas, gardens, reserves and bushland.
A total fire ban is in place across the ACT until midnight and severe fire danger conditions are forecast.
In a statement, the ESA warned if a fire starts at fire danger level of ‘severe’, it may become uncontrollable and move quickly.
