There is an adult brown snake making its way across a footpath in a car park at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands.

But over to the right, in the grass just at the edge of the same path, there is something else: two more mature brown snakes, which were, in the words of Andrew Fahy who took the photo a fortnight ago, "romancing and dancing".

Mr Fahy said he returned to the car park a week later to see a snake in the exact same spot.

"I wouldn't park my car anywhere near that spot," Mr Fahy said.

"When I go there I park my car fair dinkum perfectly in the middle of the car park."

The spot in question is located to the left as people drive into the car park. On the day the three snakes were spotted in the same area, Mr Fahy said the snakes were not concerned by people getting close to the reptiles to photograph them.

He was not the only amateur photographer in Canberra to learn in recent weeks that snakes can travel with their scaly friends.

In September Louise Botha took a photo of a large brown snake seen at the start of the Telstra Tower-Black Mountain track which she said was "was accompanied by a smaller snake that was out of the shot".

Snakes have already made their way into Canberra office buildings so far this spring.

Territory and Municipal Services rangers have already been called to remove at least five snakes in the southside areas of the ACT alone.

Wildlife rangers have this year removed brown snakes from a number of locations including a building site at Weston, a car park in Fyshwick and a garden shed in a confined backyard in Gordon.

But perhaps most concerning to Canberrans was the fact they were not necessarily assured of not seeing a snake even when at work.

Rangers also were called to move dangerous brown snakes out of two office buildings – one in Fyshwick and another at the Royal Canberra Golf course.

Examples of TAMS rangers being called out to catch snakes in the ACT's northern areas were not yet available.

As reported on Wednesday, the Therapeutic Goods Administration erected large "beware of snakes" signs to warn federal government employees and visitors to its Symonston site in semi-rural Canberra that the area was known as a snake hot spot.

Calvary Hospital has also posted signs in its car park.

Ranger Nina Bruns said eastern brown snakes were the most commonly reported snakes in the territory.

According to the ACT government, the eastern brown snake varies from brown to grey and can even be blackish, dark brown or orange.

Young snakes may be entirely brown or may have a black patch on their head and a black band on their neck. Black bands across the body may or may not be present.

They are highly venomous.

Ms Bruns said snakes were more often found in untidy backyards, or yards where food attracted rodents, such as those with bird aviaries or chicken pens.

She said if a rodent could make its way into a house, a snake could follow.

"Or sometimes pets bring them inside," she said.

The ability for a snake to get inside a home was also affected by how the land approached the structure.
