Far south coast director of lifesaving Andrew Edmunds said the season was a contrast to previous years with three fatalities recorded during 2013/14 and eight in 2011/12 – the highest number in the state.

"We've remained fatality-free, which is a fantastic result. A lot of hard work and significant contributions to keeping our coast safe," he said.

Last season, three fatalities were recorded off the south coast including the drowning of two men on October 9, 2013 at Mogareeka and Quondola Point and the death of a 63-year-old woman following a shark attack at Tathra on April 3.

Mr Edmunds thanked all volunteers involved in beach patrols and said critical statistics had fallen despite beach visitation continuing to be strong.

An estimated 72,000 people visited south coast beaches during the season with lifesavers providing first aid treatment to 103 people, which was significantly less than the almost 300 treatments provided a season earlier.

Lifesavers at Batemans Bay remained the busiest on the south coast with 37 rescues compared to 29 the year earlier.

Volunteers at Broulee rescued 17 people this season while seven rescues were recorded at Moruya and another four in the Pambula region.

"We had a number or rescues in the Merimbula/Pambula area, mostly boating accidents," Mr Edmunds said.

In late September, two children and a kayaker were rescued by members of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club after they caught in a strong outgoing tide at the mouth of the Pambula River.

The Westpac Surf Lifesaver Helicopter's winch operator Ewan McKenzie said flood rescue was increasingly becoming a core component of their work, particularly in coastal regions.

"It's so important that people don't play in a flooded river because they think it might be something fun because you're guaranteed to run into trouble and strife," he said.

Mr Edmunds warned Canberrans that public beaches would not be patrolled on the south coast until September.

"We still have call out teams available throughout winter, including jet skis and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue helicopter," he said.

Canberrans played a crucial role in the fatality-free season with close to 60 volunteers from the ACT assisting with beach patrols and rescues.

"A large number of people are joining from the Canberra region which is always good to see," he said.

"There are some diehard Canberrans who make the trek to the coast each weekend and they are now forming a large part of our contingent down here.

"We've got a large number at Broulee, Batemans Bay, Moruya and even some further down south at Tathra."
