Students at St Francis of Assisi Primary School are taught reading is fun and important and their NAPLAN results reflect that belief.

The school was highlighted by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority as recording above average improvements in the reading test as students progressed between years 3 and 5.

Principal of the Calwell school, Kate Markcrow, paid tribute to the school community's focus on literacy.

"We were looking at the data a few years back and our results were not great, they were sort of lacking in that area," she said.

"We were looking at our demographics and went 'We can improve this, this can be something we can do'."

Teachers underwent professional development and the school started offering sessions for parents on how to support their children with reading.

"Families were very enthusiastic, very willing to try new things and to push ahead with the reading program at home which was really good," Ms Markcrow said.

"We've seen a huge, huge change in our results."

The attitude of students has changed dramatically too. Kids are happy to pick up a book at lunch, every morning is dedicated to literacy and "everybody at school reads", Ms Markcrow said.

And the most popular books among students?

"In our younger grades, down in our year twos, they really like the Roald Dahl series," Ms Mackrow said.

"One of the other books that really brought them in was the Treehouse series [by Andy Griffiths] - that was a real catch in the beginning.

"In the upper primary, they're reading everything. They have a lot of free choice where they can bring to school books that they like or out of the library. They're reading a big variety of things."
