Online bidding had reached $3000 for the single plate by Friday lunchtime.
All proceeds from the C 100 number plate will go to the official Centenary of Canberra charity Dollars for Dili.
The auction ends at 2pm on May 20.
Just 100 special centenary number plates have been produced.
They have a black background and white letters and numbers. The tag "Celebrating Canberra's Centenary 1913-2013" is in gold.
None are being issued for general release but either used to raise funds for charity or given to Centenary of Canberra sponsors.
Another single plate - C 001 - will be auctioned later in the year. All proceeds from that auction will benefit Boundless, the planned new playground for all children on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin.
Sponsors of the centenary such as ActewAGL are also expected to receive a swag of the collector edition plates as part of their sponsorship deal.
The Centenary of Canberra team says "up to 50" number plates will be allocated to ACT not-for-profit and charitable organisations who successfully apply for them.
Expressions of interest in the plates are being called for with the organisations having to meet several criteria.
Chief among the requirements is that they undertake fundraising activities that give as many people as possible the chance to win a number plate, such as via a raffle.
They must also have deductible gift recipient status and deliver services in Canberra and the ACT region.
Each charity must also donate 20 per cent of their takings from their particular plate to Dollars for Dili. They keep the remaining money.
Dollars for Dili is raising money to build toilet blocks in Dili schools and an activity centre for Timor Leste Scouting. Canberra's friendship city Dili is the capital of Timor Leste.
PicklesPlus, the online auction house of Pickles Auctions Australia, has provided its services free of charge for the first auction.
The number plates can only be fitted to ACT-registered vehicles
Labor Member for Ginninderra Yvette Berry launched the number plates at the Timor Leste Embassy this week.
