ACT Policing said the chase began at about 2pm when police found the stolen white Nissan Navara utility near Allawah Flats, Braddon and the driver took off at speed.
A short time later a city patrol saw the ute, with NSW registration BKJ31W, cross over onto the incorrect side of London Circuit into oncoming traffic.
The ute travelled southbound into oncoming traffic on Vernon Circle where it narrowly missed colliding with an oncoming police car, which was positioned to deflect the fleeing vehicle around other traffic to avoid a head-on crash.
The driver continued against the traffic along Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, driving down the up-ramp onto Flynn Drive against the flow of traffic, through the streets of Parkes and Barton before police lost sight of it on Brisbane Avenue.
A short time later the car was seen heading back into the area saturated with police vehicles before driving through several red lights away from police.
The ute was last seen in the vicinity of the Hyatt Hotel on Flynn Drive, Yarralumla.
Police are urging witnesses or anyone who may know the identity of the driver to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via https://act.crimestoppers.com.au.
