The $16.5 million Casey Marketplace is among plans for the growing suburb of Casey in Gungahlin and would service the surrounding suburbs of Ngunnawal, Nicholls and Hall.
According to a development application lodged with ACT Planning and Land Authority, the single-level Marketplace – off Clarrie Hermes Drive – would accommodate two supermarkets, a specialty retail area, internal arcades and amenities.
Although the 11,195-metre-square proposed centre would be located about two kilometres south of the suburb's local centre, the Marketplace would provide the major retail facilities for the area, according to the DA.
The application also proposed the construction of a 332-space car park to the south of the planned centre, opposite Kingland Parade.
Development is already under way at the car park site, which will include a service station, club site, community facility and residential development.
The site of the proposed car park is subject to a variation of a deed of agreement requiring the construction of a third supermarket in the future subject to demand.
A mixed-used development is also under construction to the north-east of the Marketplace.
Both the development and separate car park will be landscaped to enhance the amenity and environmental performance of the site, including formal pathways, soft landscaping and plantings, tree planting and street furniture.
A number of plans are also in the works for Casey's group centre, including a club, community recreational facilities and further commercial development, according to the DA.
The latter would include a landscape spine linking local parks with the commercial centre.
“Once complete the precinct will be a vibrant and diverse Group Centre, with the proposed development generating substantial economic and social activity for the local area,” the application stated.
