As Canberra hit a peak of 35 degrees, most people at Batemans Bay stayed indoors during a cool and overcast Friday, before the sun arrived in the mid-afternoon and the temperature reached 24.
Down at Tathra, Victorian couple Anthony Moore and Jo Stuart had earlier brought their daughter Holly for her first seaside adventure.
The Gisborne couple said they had been to the beach most days of their coastal stay, with 13-month-old Holly making light work of knocking down her father's sandcastles.
''We went to a few places, checked it out - but, yeah, Tathra's the best,'' Ms Stuart said.
Mr Moore said he had holidayed on the south coast for the past seven or eight years, and for about a decade when he was a child.
Temperatures in the nation's capital and the nearby coast are set to merge on the weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology is tipping a sunny Saturday and Sunday for Canberra with tops of 26 and 28.
Batemans Bay will have a partly cloudy Saturday with a possible shower and top of 23. On Sunday it will reach 28, with a clear afternoon. Conditions will be similar at Merimbula and Bega.
Waves are forecast to peak at 1.7 metres around Ulladulla at 8am on Saturday, with a southerly swell of about one metre on Sunday morning and up to 1.5 metres by the evening.
