The heat rose in Canberra's property market yesterday.
CANBERRA turned on the charm yesterday, as the real estate market conducted the last auctions of summer.
The weather and quality of properties on offer attracted large crowds to the 26 auctions across the capital.
A crowd of about 50 people attended the auction of 44 Frome Street, Griffith, but a buyer was not among the throng.
Peter Blackshaw Real Estate Woden and Weston Creek agent Shane Killalea said only one registered bidder made an offer before the fully renovated three-bedroom house was passed in.
However, Mr Killalea said a number of offers were made after the auction. ‘‘It’s a hot property, probably the pick of the streets in Griffith, so I don’t think we’ll have too much trouble selling it in the near future,’’ he said.
‘‘There’s plenty of interest there so it’s just a matter of negotiating ... we’re hopeful it will sell in the coming days.’’
Fourteen of 22 properties sold at auction last weekend and there was another strong showing yesterday, with 11 of 26 offerings selling under the hammer.
Buyers snapped up two homes prior to auction and mid-week results were also positive.
Mr Killalea said mid-range properties were currently attracting the most interest. A four-bedroom home at 2 Whitton Place, Monash proved this popularity by selling for $755,000. Of 10 registered bidders, six contested the sale with some rapid and entertaining bidding.
LJ Hooker Tuggeranong director Mario Sanfrancesco said the battle boded well for the market heading into March.
‘‘We’ve been averaging three to four registered parties at recent auctions, but to have 10 on this property, we were delighted,’’ he said.
Mr Sanfrancesco said political upheaval often dulled the Canberra market, but not yesterday.
‘‘We’ve found that at the last 12 auctions, we’ve sold eight and another is under offer.
‘‘The numbers of people attending open homes are slightly down, but while there’s less lookers there’s more genuine interest from those coming through ... Hopefully we can find them the right homes for the genuine buyers, it’s an ongoing challenge in real estate, having the right stock at the right time.’’
