Run by the Canberra Grief Centre, the support group for 16 to 30-year-olds meet at a New Acton cafe once a month for a group counselling session, as well as the chance to interact over coffee.

After a trial in 2015, the group started in July 2016 thanks to a one-off grant of $1500 from the Community Services Directorate, which has allowed for the service to remain free for those who attend.

However, with the funding set to run out at the end of June, it's not known whether the support group will continue.

Louise Blessington, who helped to set up the group following the death of her father four years ago, said the funding situation had created uncertainty within the tight-knit group.

"People in the group have expressed that it's important to be able to talk to people who have shared a similar experience," she said.

"I've been running around applying for lots of grants to try and keep it going because it's been so valuable for the people involved."

Ms Blessington said the grant money had been used to pay for counselling as well as for coffee once the session had finished.

She said keeping the group free had allowed it to be more accessible to people.

"We've been able to provide the service free of charge because people who have ceased caring responsibilities for their parents often don't have a lot of spare cash," Ms Blessington said.

Mandy Cox, who runs the counselling session, said the group has helped people mourning the loss of a parent to come together.

"One of the main things is that it normalises their experiences and it validates their experiences of loss," she said.

"It removes the sense of isolation from young people, and they have safe space to talk honestly and openly ... and receive support through the knowledge that there are others experiencing losses in the community."

Mrs Cox said while funding for the group has not been secured, they were optimistic about the support group continuing in its current form.

"It's a bit of a wait and see, we are hopeful that there's some sort of organisation that we can tap into for the next financial year," she said.

"We haven't got there yet, but we are still holding out."

A spokeswoman for the Community Services Directorate said the money provided to the support group was provided as a 12 month grant.

"They are not intended as a recurring funding source. The most recent grant rounds were announced during National Youth Week," the spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said $25,000 worth of grants were distributed across 19 groups in the 2016-17 financial year, and it's expected the same amount will be available the next financial year.

"We encourage community groups such as the youth support group to apply for this grant," the spokeswoman said.
