About 2.20pm yesterday officers from Gungahlin saw a large amount of smoke coming from the Salvation Army charity bins located on Ernest Cavanagh Street.
Fire crews were called to extinguish the fire, however three charity bins and their contents were damaged.
Police would like to speak to two young girls who witnesses observed near the bins prior to the fire. They were possibly driving a 1990s model silver Mitsubishi Magna or similar.
Officer in Charge of Gungahlin Station Jeff Knight said it is disappointing that someone would destroy bins containing charitable donations.
"This is a despicable at any time of year but it is particularly low leading up to Christmas," he said.
"Arsonists often stay in the area to watch a fire they have lit, so the bystanders may well be those who lit the fire."
Anyone who witnessed the incident and is yet to speak to police, or who saw a car matching the above description in the area is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
