Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera can lay claim to being the most successful single entertainment event to date, with grosses of more than $5 billion. It's had two highly successful professional tours in Australia, with audiences flocking to see the love triangle of young soprano Christine, aristocrat Raoul and the mysterious masked man who lives beneath the Paris Opera House.
