There are more than 700,000 urban trees in the ACT, but the young trees are often the ones at greater risk.
TAMS, which manages Canberra trees, has developed a program to ensure about 21,000 of the young trees are watered monthly but, in dry conditions, sometimes this is not enough.
Urban Treescapes acting manager Luke Bulkeley says community involvement will significantly help maintain healthy trees.
''While we are doing our best to ensure Canberra's trees remain healthy, any help from the community in terms of watering is always appreciated and very beneficial,'' he said.
''The community can make a significant difference when keeping trees alive during this hot, dry period.''
Mr Bulkeley says eight litres of water once a week is all young trees need to survive and urges people to look out for parched specimens.
The TAMS tree watering program uses non-potable water from Lake Burley Griffin, Lake Tuggeranong, Lake Ginninderra and Yerrabi Ponds.
''Over the past two years, TAMS has utilised GPS technology to help manage the complex watering program that is spread across 96 Canberra suburbs,'' Mr Bulkeley said.
''The technology has led to the program becoming more efficient, with young trees getting watered more regularly, resulting in a reduction of tree loss.''
