The chase, which reached speeds of up to 160km/h, ended when the 16-year-old crashed on a roundabout on William Slim Drive in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police said in a statement to the media that they first noticed the stolen silver BMW parked at a Shell service station in Dickson about 3am.

They allege the girl noticed the police car and moved from a passenger seat into the driver's seat, before driving away.

The officers followed, activating their sirens, but the girl allegedly failed to pull over.

She was chased along Antill Street toward Northbourne Avenue, and along the Barton Highway, police say.

But the teenager is said to have crashed on a roundabout, forcing her to stop due to major damage to the car's undercarriage.

The vehicle was found to have stolen number plates and to have property that was believed to have been stolen in it.

She was arrested and charged later on Tuesday, before being brought to the ACT Childrens Court.

Police say the girl was charged with driving unlicensed, driving a stolen motor vehicle, failing to stop when directed by police and possession of stolen property.

Magistrate Karen Fryar denied her bail, and she was remanded in custody.

The case will reappear before the court on May 1.

Police say an 18-year-old woman will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date accused of riding in a stolen motor vehicle.
