It isn't often, however, that she has to care for animals that are so small they need to be weighed on a jeweller's scale and be looked at under a magnifying glass.

The Yass resident and Wildcare Queanbeyan volunteer cares for three injured microbats, and said the colder months could often be a dangerous time for the creatures.

"In summer they're able to turn around more quickly [if they're injured] and go into the warmer weather and there's insects for them to eat, and there's nothing for them to eat in winter," she said.

"If they're found around this time of year there's usually something wrong with them, which means they've come out of torpor, which is like a light hibernation, and there's nothing they can do to replace that energy that they would've stored up for winter."

While regular bats often have a wingspan of up to one metre, the microbats Mrs Morgan is looking after are no larger than six centimetres and weigh between four and five grams.

Despite winter typically being the season wildlife rescuers are caring for kangaroo joeys, Mrs Morgan said there were often plenty of injured bats rescued from around the ACT area.

"They're quite common around Canberra. You just don't see them because they're little, and many think that they're moths on first look," she said.

"The bats are often found in sheds or under woodpiles."

Two of the bats Mrs Morgan is caring for have problems with their wings, while the third suffered a knock to the head.

The wildcare volunteer will help to look after the microbats until September or October, when the temperature will be warm enough for there to be enough food available for them.

For now Mrs Morgan has to feed the bats in her care a rather unusual concoction.

"It's called bat custard, which is a mix of baby food, vitamins as well as carnivore mix. It's very liquidy and full of calcium," she said.

"I also try to feed them lots of real worms."

If the three bats weren't enough for Mrs Morgan, who's been a wildcare volunteer for the past five years, she's also helping to look after 12 eastern grey kangaroos as well as four wombats.

While Canberrans may stumble upon injured bats over the next couple of months, Mrs Morgan said the best course of action was to call wildlife rescue, as some bats could be carrying the rabies-like Lyssavirus.

"All the wildlife volunteers are vaccinated in the slight chance that the bats have it," she said.
