Recognised as such for the pun on the famous line uttered in the space epic, the day provides the chance for die-hard enthusiasts to get into character and celebrate the saga.

Matt Mulcahy and his girlfriend Tegan Smith grew up watching the franchise.

It wasn't until a year into their relationship that Mr Mulcahy introduced Miss Smith to his screen-accurate replica of a clone commander costume.

"When Matt and I started dating, we did all the normal stuff like going to the movies on dates," Miss Smith said.

"One day he pulled out this armour kit from his wardrobe. I asked what it was, and he said it was a Star Wars costume."

"I was like, 'that's the best thing ever!'," she said.

"He was a bit worried about what I would think, but I love it."

Both are now involved in the ultimate costuming fan club, the 501st Legion Southern Cross Garrison.

"I'm one of the lovely people operating the Death Star," Miss Smith said.

"It's all fun, and we're all from the empire side of the story, so we're the bad guys doing good and it's fun to be a bad guy sometimes."

While the duo were thrilled at the impending release of The Force Awakens, other members are trying to avoid any tidbits of information.

Damian Mactavish, who has served as a scout trooper since 2014, said he had blocked everything on Facebook about the new film.

"I saw the trailer for Terminator and it just gave away half the story line," Mr Mactavish said. "So after that, when I saw the new Star Wars trailer coming out, I thought, you know what I'm just going to bypass that if I can."

The members agreed Monday would be an extra special day, as feverish excitement was building in the lead up to the new instalment.

While not everyone could replicate movie-quality costumes, Mr Mulcahy said people could celebrate in a variety of different ways.

"People celebrate Star Wars around the world in many different ways, and it isn't limited to or exclusive of anything," he said.

While most of the garrison is heading to Sydney on Monday, Canberrans can catch a glimpse of them in costume at Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, at Impact Comics, Garema Place.
