Nearly a decade ago (wow, doesn’t time fly?), Canberra singer Hayley Jensen finished fourth in the second series of Australian Idol.

Now she’s back as a contestant on the new series of The Voice, which returns to WIN-TV on Sunday night at 6.30pm.
Channel Nine is keeping everything hush-hush but Jensen has been spotted on the promos.
The now 31-year-old singer has most recently been performing with three-piece dance-rock band Silver Cities, based in Sydney, including touring as a support act for Evermore.
The former University of Canberra student will smash it on The Voice, we’re sure.

Home where the art is
The second annual homegrown This is ART MARKET will be held this weekend at the Yarralula Woolshed off the Cotter Road.
It will run from 10am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday.
More than 45 well-known and emerging local artists and performers will be showcasing their works.
ART MARKET co-founder Melissa Christie said the event was about bringing the concept of local farmers’ markets to art in the Canberra region.
“We all increasingly care about buying food locally to support local growers, so we think it’s time to apply this idea to art,” Mel said.
“We want the people and families living in and around Canberra to see art which is created by locals. We want them to meet artists, and enjoy the best of art in Canberra.”
Artists participating include Gillian Jackson, Christina Thwaites, Fiona Hill, Jennifer Baird, Mary Hick, Sally Dunbar and Michael Ashley.
Market kitchen rules
Canberra’s My Kitchen Rules contestants Andrew Hinge and Emelia Vimalasiri are cooking up a storm at Belconnen Fresh Food Markets from noon to 2pm on Saturday. They will be making a tasty salad in honour of Heart Week, run by the Heart Foundation to put the focus on healthy, heart-smart living.
It seems eons ago that Andrew and Emelia were the first couple eliminated from MKR and they were pleased to see South Australian mums Bree and Jess take out the title this week, knocking out WA friends Chloe and Kelly.
“We think the best team won in the end,” Emelia said. “Bree and Jess worked really hard and were the most deserving on the day. We thought their food was amazing and really wanted to see them win.
“But we would have also liked to see [Queensland dads] Paul and Blair in the final with them, they worked really hard and showed some great skill.”
Pumped for pumpkin fest
Tim the Yowie Man will be judging the very prestigious scarecrow competition at this weekend’s wonderful Collector Village Pumpkin Festival.
Although, we have to agree with him that last year’s cheeky winner (pictured) will be hard to beat, the Dowling family of Collector triumphant with their imaginative design.
The festival is on Sunday from 10am to 4pm and always attracts thousands of people to the little village north of Canberra, enjoying one of the great autumn events, with more than 80 market stalls, live entertainment, pumpkin displays, kids’ activities and lots of pumpkin soup and scones.
Tim will be judging the scarecrows in the churchyard about 1pm. And don’t expect to see any crows around Collector over the weekend with 100 scarecrows set to be entered.
Head of the festival committee Gary Poile said the appeal of the event was probably that it was at such a stunning time of year and a good excuse for a trip to the country. And, of course, the pumpkins.
“I’m glad when we were deciding what sort of festival we were having we went for pumpkins, not cucumbers,” he said, with a laugh.
Comic book day drawing a crowd
It’s Free Comic Book Day on Saturday at Impact Comics in Garema Place in Civic. Doors open at 9am.
The event is part of a worldwide movement to share the love of comics.
Stormtroopers and roller derby players will be on hand at the Canberra store to meet fans and pose for photos, so bring your camera.
Comics artists will be on hand from 10am to draw pictures for kids of all ages. From 1pm, comics writer Ryan K. Lindsay will be in store to meet fans.
Doyle booked in
Canberra will always claim former Sunrise host Melissa Doyle as its own.
Doyle worked for both Prime Television and WIN Television in Canberra. And she met her Canberra-born husband John on a blind date at the Hyatt Hotel. Good enough for us.
The newsreader and journalist will be discussing her new book Alphabet Soup at the National Library of Australia next Saturday, May 10. It’s a collection of anecdotes about life on and off the screen and juggling a high-profile career with motherhood. The talk will start at 1.30pm.
The cost is $15 including refreshments. Bookings are essential at nla.gov.au/bookings or on 6262 1271 (Monday to Friday, 9am-noon).
