James Svilicich was charged with stealing 49 pairs of Prada and five pairs of Burberry sunglasses from Belconnen Myer on Wednesday. Police arrested him at a house in Charnwood on Friday. He was refused bail at the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Constable Mathew Tonge told the court CCTV footage showed Mr Svilicich behind the Sunglass Hut counter on Wednesday. A later search of his Charnwood home turned up 28 pairs of sunglasses.
''He has a known drug problem and no known legal form of income,'' Constable Tonge said.
Magistrate Beth Campbell said it was a ''brazen example of shoplifting'' while on a good behaviour order for similar crimes.
Ms Campbell told Mr Svilicich he had an appalling criminal record for someone so young and it was likely he would commit more crimes if released from custody.
''For a 24-year-old man he has the most appalling criminal record,'' she said.
Mr Svilicich was refused bail and will reappear in court on April 10.
