Properties within a 100m cordon were evacuated around 5.20pm as ACT Policing officers brought in specialist equipment including a robotic device and a portable detonation tank to remove the suspicious item.
Members from Tuggeranong patrol attended and cordoned the area, requesting the assistance of the Specialist Response Group Bomb Response Team.
Officers notified residents in the immediate area, with three homes evacuated until the item could be removed safely after 9pm.
Tewksbury Circuit was closed in both directions during the operation, with small numbers of local residents watching on from outside homes at the cordon boundary.
The SRG Bomb Response Team removed the package and it was taken to a controlled location before being rendered safe. An ACT Policing spokeswoman said the item was the subject of ongoing examination and analysis by Australian Federal Police Forensics officers and the investigation into its origin would continue.
Acting Superintendent Darren Rath thanked residents for their co-operation and understanding during the four hour incident.
"The actions of the home owners are to be commended for contacting police and identifying the package as potentially dangerous," he said. On Sunday, the Specialist Response Group and local officers attended a residence in Kaleen where another suspicious device was rendered safe.
