Most of the Royal Show marvels from the produce, the woodcutters or the preened animals in pens, were there to rival the best in their class.

For the first time, a new class of craft was introduced at the Canberra Royal Show Craft Expo enabling competitors to put forward works created in Lego for judging.

Canberra Lego User Group member and Lego-lover Tamara Dadswell's won the supreme title at the expo, the champion of champions, with Mirror Mirror her lenticular mosaic masterpiece of Snow White and the evil stepmother.

The artwork, constructed over a six month period using more than 15,000 individual pieces, had crowds transfixed as they watched the picture change depending on the angle they viewed it from.

Mrs Dadswell's said it was amazing to win, particularly in the year that Lego first became a craft category.

"To be given this accolade for craft is an honour, but it is amazing to know Lego has been recognised as something more than a toy," she said. "My youngest son Thomas entered in the Lego too and won a second place so it's been a big weekend."

Four legged contestants were also under judge's scrutiny.

Record-breaking numbers of teams entered this year in Flyball – a fast-paced team relay sport for dogs.

Five-year-old Diesel is just one of the many pooches that can jump four hurdles, race to a spring loaded box, retrieve a tennis ball, and return to his screaming owners the start line in a manner of seconds.

Hasting Howlers member Troy Rawlings said hitting times of 5.01 seconds was typical for Diesel, a dog he adopted as a rescue animal and trained.

Mr Rawlings said Flyball was a workout for both dogs and owners and an exhilarating event for spectators.

"It's quite physical and you go home just as exhausted as they do," he said.

But in other pavilions it is not athleticism that wins ribbons.

Australian Alpaca Association Judge Lyn Dickson said, after 22 years, she had developed a keen eye for a wining animal in the ring.

"When you are judging it's about 60 per cent on the fleece and 40 per cent on the frame and confirmation of the animal," she said.

She said there were only a handful of opportunities for owners to show their animals at such a high-calibre event, and some of the 270 registered alpacas had come from as far afield as South Australia and Victoria.

The show continues on Sunday from 8.30am to 6pm.
