Michael John Johnstone, 20, was brought before the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday over his role in the Gungahlin Village ram raid late last month.

Dramatic CCTV footage captured the moments a stolen Subaru Impreza was used to ram through security doors and drive through the shopping centre in the early hours of the morning.

Workers were inside the shops at the time, the court heard, and were lucky not to be hurt.

Two offenders, who cannot be identified, jumped out and took more than $20,000 in jewellery before fleeing the scene.

The Subaru was later torched and the offenders have been at large ever since.

The raid caused more than $50,000 in damage, the court heard.

Johnstone was arrested on Thursday afternoon, and charged with burglary, property damage, driving a stolen vehicle and arson.

He applied for bail before Magistrate Robert Cook on Friday morning, a move opposed by prosecutors.

Police told the court they'd found blood and DNA that closely matched Johnstone's at the scene, despite him saying he'd never set foot in the store.

Police feared his drug habit and lack of employment may cause him to reoffend.

There were also concerns the seriousness of the offences, his lack of fixed abode, and history of breaching court-imposed conditions may make him a risk of absconding.

Police also feared Johnstone may interfere with evidence, the court hearing those involved in the crime were a small group who knew each other well.

Mr Cook denied bail, citing Johnstone's history, the nature of the ongoing investigations, and the risk of reoffending.

"The risk is simply too great to allow you liberty, albeit conditionally," he said.

The case will reappear later this month.

Police say they may lay further charges against Johnstone and that other investigations are ongoing.
