For a week in 2015, a 26-year-old Canberra man held a woman in his home against her will, repeatedly raped her and then forced her to carve his name into her arm with a knife.

He forced her to cook and clean for him, took control of her phone and money, threatened to chop her head off, and to chop her legs off and throw her body in the sea at Darwin.

The 26-year-old slapped and pinched the immigrant woman, and said it would be easy to kill her because she was in Australia illegally.

"The king remains king," he told her.

On Wednesday in the ACT Supreme Court, Justice John Burns jailed the man for 13 years and 8 months, with a non-parole period of eight years and two months.

He will be eligible for release in June 2023, at which time Justice Burns noted the Pakistani man was likely to be deported from Australia.

Justice Burns said he had described in detail the man's offences, because it was "important to acknowledge the depths of your depravity."

The man's actions went well beyond sexual gratification and were about wielding power over the vulnerable woman, he said.

The judge rejected the man's claims he could not remember the offences. The court heard expert reports conclude the man had no impairments to long or short term memory.

Other experts said the man suffered no significant mental illness, and his suggestions in the alternative were "considered spurious".

Justice Burns called the man's claims he would self-harm if jailed or deported an attempt to put pressure on the court to impose a more lenient sentence.

"That tactic won't work," he told the man.

He also rejected the man's claims he was drinking "a litre of spirits" every day at the time of the offences.

The court heard how the woman felt guilty and blamed herself for what had happened, fearing she was now perceived as "cheap".

Justice Burns said he had taken into account that the man did not use a condom, exposing the woman to pregnancy and infection. He also said the man's guilty pleas were in this case not revealing of remorse. That the man had no significant criminal history was also given little weight by his Honour, considering the seriousness of the offences.

After he was arrested in May 2015, the man pleaded guilty in April to unlawful confinement, assault, and four counts of rape.

The woman had eventually escaped by fleeing from a car she'd been forced to wait in and asking a passer-by for help.

Police were called and the woman, who was in Australia unlawfully, was detained and later sent to Villawood Detention Centre.
