Deepika and Shakti Khemchandani, along with sons Sidhaan, six, and three-year-old Samar, were the first residents of Canberra's newest community when they moved into their freshly-built home late last year.

It's a long way from Mr and Mrs Khemchandani's Indian hometown in almost every sense.

There's been no traffic. Sidhaan and Samar are able to ride their bikes down the street and have had the park to themselves.

Save for prospective residents peering into display homes and the drone of development around them, it's been "like living in a resort", according to Mrs Khemchandani.

"It was a completely new experience, especially coming from where we do - full of noise and chaos - and moving into a suburb where there was literally nothing," she said.

"It was beautiful. It was something completely different."

The Suburban Land Agency expects Throsby - named after European explorer Charles Throsby - to eventually house about 2500 Canberrans. It should be fully developed in about four years.

A residents' breakfast held in the park last week attracted about 35 people, some of whom owned vacant blocks or were still building their home.

The Khemchandanis are members of the Throsby Mingle group, a branch of the ACT government's community development program, and believe the suburb will be eventually filled with young families.

The former Harrison residents chose Throsby because of its proximity to the Gungahlin marketplace, Sidhaan's school and Mr and Mrs Khemchandani's government jobs.

"We were sure we wanted to stay in the Gungahlin district so that's why we stayed close-by as well," Mrs Khemchandani said.

"We have a lot of immigrants over here so we feel quite at home, in a way, and the fact our kids have everything over here, they have activities and their school and everything else."

There have been challenges. The Khemchandani's house is not yet on Google Maps, a huge challenge when trying to organise the delivery of products or services. The family had to contact NBN directly to let them know the suburb even existed.

But they're sure they made the right choice. And others are moving in - recently, they've noticed a few more bins on the streets.

"Just the suburb had a really good feel to it the first time we drove past. It just clicked with us," Mrs Khemchandani said.
