The Crown alleges that Anthony Catanzariti, 24, was owed $2500 for drugs he gave to the man on credit in 2012.
Catanzariti allegedly turned up at an inner northside unit where his debtor was having beers with friends one night in July 2012.
He, his girlfriend and another man allegedly walked into the unit and sat down, making the debtor and his friends uncomfortable.
A short time later, prosecutors allege, Catanzariti started bashing the man, punching, slapping and elbowing him.
What followed, according to Crown prosecutor Sarah McMurray, was a ''long night'' of violence.
''The next morning he was barely recognisable to his friends,'' she said. ''[Name removed] was beaten, violated, and repeatedly humiliated by the accused.''
Catanzariti is accused of sexually assaulting the man with a beer bottle, attempting to violate him with a pencil and a screwdriver and using a vacuum cleaner on him indecently.
The Crown say he used a metallic egg cup to pierce the man's ears, and made a dog perform indecent acts on him.
The next morning, the complainant left the unit, saying he had a Centrelink appointment but instead going to the city police station. He was then taken to hospital and the Crown says 27 individual injuries were recorded.
Catanzariti is now facing six charges, one of sexual intercourse without consent, one of attempted sexual intercourse without consent, three acts of indecency on the man and one act of indecency in the presence of another girl.
He is fighting the charges but his barrister, Ray Livingston, did not make an opening submission.
The trial continues in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday before Justice Hilary Penfold.
