The NSW Rural Fire Service has declared a total fire ban on Tuesday for the council areas of Goulburn Mulwaree, Palerang, Queanbeyan, Upper Lachlan and Yass Valley.

The ACT's fire danger rating has been elevated to very high, but there is no total fire ban in the territory.

In the NSW regions, hot works such as welding and gas cutting are prohibited from being carried out in the open while the ban is in place. Fires in the open are also off limits.

NSW Rural Fire Service Association president Ken Middleton urged residents to assist rural firefighters coming into warmer weather by preparing a bush fire survival plan.

"The men and women of the service willingly put their lives at risk every time they respond to emergency calls and we want them to return safely to their families," Mr Middleton said.

"I appeal for the community to be prudent and keep abreast of fire warnings and developments within their local area."

The ACT Rural Fire Service stands at readiness level three with winds up to 70 kilometres per hour predicted to buffer the capital while temperatures stretch into the early 30s.

Sixteen units are standing by, as well as two bulldozers, a grader and firefighting aircraft.

The remote mountain fire watch towers have reopened, with their bincocular-bearing observers monitoring the surrounding bushland for embers or smoke.

The Rivers Rural Fire Service doorknocked in Coombs on Sunday to warn people about the risk of bushfire in their area.

Canberrans concerned about their risk of bushfire can use a map developed by the ACT Emergency Services to find out where the highest danger levels are.
