Anecdotal figures from the Canberra Hospital gender dysphoria team and trans support service A Gender Agenda reveal a growing rate of children and teens seeking support for gender dysphoria.

The surge has bolstered calls for a multi-disciplinary clinic to help manage the physical, mental and emotional requirements of young transgender Canberrans.

A Gender Agenda executive director Sue Webeck said the complexities surrounding children and young people with gender dysphoria meant access to treatment in Canberra would help alleviate some of the distresses faced in this situation.

"If there is the provision of a one-stop shop where people can access a range of medical and social supports it would support the broader trans and intersex community," she said.

In the past five months, since Ms Webeck took over as executive director, more than 20 schools had engaged the organisation to provide support and education to staff and students.

"We had a substantial increase in our [support and education] services being delivered within the high school age range, primarily between 14 and 17," Ms Webeck said.

"However, we are seeing an increase in access rates for parents and caregivers of children under the age of 16 as well, and that includes in the under-12 age bracket."

These figures are compatible with the numbers being seen at the Canberra Hospital.

A small gender dysphoria team is being led by paediatric endocrinologist Dr Tony Lafferty.

Dr Lafferty has 12 patients between the ages of 10 and 17 years old undergoing treatment for gender dysphoria.

"Even with this amount there is enough for a clinic specifically for their needs," Dr Lafferty said.

"At the moment there isn't a specific, defined clinic in terms of structure, but nevertheless we are looking at trying to put in place a more formal structure."

Dr Lafferty would like to see the introduction of a gender dysphoria clinic with on-site psychiatrists and psychologists as well as medical professionals to better support patients and their families.

"This is a condition that has a very real risk of associated mental health disorders if not adequately treated and supported, including self harm and suicide. It is not a minor problem, there is significant risk," he said.

"There is some quite good literature from Sweden that shows while the incidence of self-harm and suicidality is reduced, it doesn't disappear altogether [when they transition], and hence the importance of ongoing support for these young people."

Dr Lafferty described the current team as ad-hoc, drawn together and almost at capacity in the current format.

"Multi-disciplinary models are a very effective way of actually helping best. It's probably the best care and treatment for people with gender disorders, gender uncertainty or transgender people," he said.
