Gabor Laszlo Aranyi has pleaded not guilty by way of mental impairment to murdering 75-year-old Ottilia Aranyi at her home in Yarralumla.
Ms Aranyi's body was found on April 2 and her 32-year-old son was subsequently charged over her death.
After his arrest, Aranyi spent time in a psychiatric unit before being transferred to the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions John Lundy earlier this afternoon told the ACT Magistrates Court he was yet to receive the final forensics reports.
But he said it was anticipated the case would be committed for trial when the matter is next before the court on October 25.
Under territory law, a mental impairment includes "senility, intellectual disability, mental illness, brain damage and severe personality disorder".
The law states a person with a mental impairment is not criminally responsible for an offence if the impairment meant they could not control their actions, did not realise their actions were wrong or they did not know the "nature and quality" of their conduct.
Aranyi remains in custody.
