A semi trailer and a b-double were both travelling north when they collided near Marulan, 25 kilometres north of Goulburn, about 8.30am.
A police rescue team freed the driver of the semi trailer, a 37-year-old Bargo man, from the wreckage.
He was airlifted via the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter to The Canberra Hospital for further medical checks.
An ACT Health spokeswoman said the man was in a stable condition as of 5pm.
The b-double driver, a 43-year-old Lavington man, was not hurt in the crash.
The crash closed the road on Wednesday morning and delayed traffic for much of the day.
The first lane of nortbound traffic opened about 10.15am. Both trucks had been removed from the road as of 12.30pm and both lanes had opened just after 1pm.
Traffic was banked up on the highway for at least 5km by midday and motorists were encouraged to avoid the area near Towrang. Congestion had eased as of 1.30pm.
