The Tuggeranong Community Council has voted to oppose the ACT government's light rail project, saying it is too expensive and will never come to the valley.

At its meeting on Tuesday evening, the council voted against the project, which it said imposed an excessive cost on Tuggeranong residents, given that it would be a long time before they saw any benefits.

In the adopted motion, the council said the ACT government didn't have a mandate for the project and that the council did not support a levy on the city to pay for it.

It also called on the ACT government to make the likely initial capital cost public.
